In August 2025, ACAT Benin, with the support of FIACAT and UATC, officially launched a project aiming at guaranteeing access to justice for pretrial detainees in three prisons in Benin.

In August 2025, ACAT Benin officially launched the project "Guaranteeing access to justice for prisoners awaiting trial in three prisons in Benin" during a workshop held in Cotonou, which gathered civil society, financial and technical partners.

Endemic overcrowding in Benin, which results in ill-treatment in detention and impairs access to rights, is due in particular to the widespread use of preventive detention, the neglect of detainees due to administrative difficulties, and the lack of collaboration between actors in the criminal justice system. Based on this observation, ACAT Benin is implementing a project aimed at improving respect for judicial guarantees, access to justice, and the protection of detainees against torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment in Benin's three prisons. This project focuses on strengthening the institutional capacities of actors in the judicial system and strengthening the protection of prisoners' rights in the three target prisons. This project is financially supported by the European Union as part of the program to combat abusive pretrial detention led by FIACAT in partnership with members of the UATC Consortium.
