Conventions

- Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Adopted on 10 December 1948.

Article 3 :
"Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person."

- International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)
Adopted in 1966, entry into force 23 March 1976.

Article 6 :
"1. Every human being has the inherent right to life. This right shall be protected by law. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his life."

- Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant aiming at the abolition of the death penalty.
Adopted in December 1989.

- Convention on the Rights of the Child
Adopted in 1989, entry into force on 2 September 1990.

Article 37 :
"States Parties shall ensure that : (a) No child shall be subjected to torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Neither capital punishment nor life imprisonment without possibility of release shall be imposed for offences committed by persons below eighteen years of age..."

- Resolution 62/149 on a Moratorium on the Death Penalty
Adopted by the UN General Assembly on 18 December 2007.

- Resolution 63/168 on a Moratorium on the Death Penalty
Adopted by the UN General Assembly on 18 December 2008.

- Resolution 65/206 on a Moratorium on the Death Penalty
Adopted by the UN General Assembly on 21 December 2010.
