A lawyer specialising in international human rights law, Honorary Director of Research at the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), lecturer in the Human Rights and Ethics Master’s course at the University of Strasbourg and expert consultant to international organisations, Jean-Bernard Marie joined ACAT France in 1979 and was a member of its Steering Committee.

He is the former Secretary General of the International Institute of Human Rights founded by René Cassin (France). 

He has also been the representative of the Conference of European Justice and Peace Commissions to the Council of Europe since 2011.

In June 2020, Jean-Bernard Marie was re-elected for a third term to the International Bureau of FIACAT.
