Target prisons: Antanimora (Antananarivo) and Ambalatavoahangy (Toamasina)

Prison statistics in November 2019 :

• Antanimora (Antananarivo)
  • On 27/11/2019 : the prison had an occupancy rate of 530 % and the detainees awaiting trial represented 50 % of the prison population
  • On September 2021 : the prison had an occupancy rate of 409 % and the detainees awaiting trial represented 51.7 % of the prison population
• Ambalatavoahangy (Toamasina)
  • On 30/09/2019 : the prison had an occupancy rate of 235 % and the detainees awaiting trial represented 81 % of the prison population
  • On September 2021 : the prison had an occupancy rate of 184 % and the detainees awaiting trial represented 38.5 % of the prison population

Results in 2021:

• 32 court decisions were obtained
• 62 representative from the prison staff, the judicial staff and civil society participated in quarterly working meetings organised by ACAT Madagascar on issues related to the administration of justice, the conditions of detention and the respect of legal safeguards.
• 10 advocacy meetings were organised by ACAT Madagascar with its national authorities
• 16 visits of the targeted prisons were organised 
• 444 detainees were interviewed
