The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has reinforced its legal framework protecting human rights internally, regionally, and internationally. However, since the last legislative and presidential elections organized there, the human rights situation has deteriorated. The country is seeing kidnappings, arrests, and illegal detentions, among other human rights violations.
These arrests and detentions are, for the most part, accompanied by acts of torture. Certain victims have died in places of detention because they did not have access to appropriate medical care. One such case is that of Major Yawa, who died in detention after being tortured by security guards and then being deprived of health care.
